Recruitment
Land transport in New Zealand is a growth industry. Transit needs qualified engineers, committed to the principles of sustainability and with a background in pavement management, road engineering standards and policy development, transportation planning, asset management, integrated transport systems, traffic engineering, project/contract management.
Transit has a proactive, future-oriented approach to implementing capital and maintenance projects, and works on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of procurement techniques.
Success approaches include design and build contracts for major construction projects, performance-specified contracts for the long-term procurement of maintenance services, and industry alliances to achieve better cost estimating.
Transit's one-page strategy links all of its five divisions. The five divisions are Strategic Support, Transport Planning, Network Operations, Capital Projects and Corporate Services.
Your Transit colleagues
Transit has a national staff of about 450. Of these more than 250 work in one of Transit's seven regional offices and are directly involved in managing the state highway network.

Each graduate is employed on a permanent contract and receives all the benefits and options received by Transit staff. When they have received sufficient experience and training, they are encouraged to apply for established positions in their chosen speciality within the organisation.
Who are we looking for?
Transit requires people with a wide range of skills and experience in the planning or civil engineering areas.
General qualities we are looking for are:
- Good interpersonal skills and a commitment to doing the best possible job
- The ability to work flexibly and cope with different work demands and timeframes is also important.
What can I expect?
The first two years to 30 months are spent in offices of Transit. The graduate may be moved into different internal divisions after consultation between the graduate and managers.
After this you can expect to be seconded out to gain more skills and experience. On return to Transit, the graduate should have gained sufficient experience in order to apply for established positions.
Transit has a strong commitment and focus on career development and all graduates are mentored through their time at Transit.
Ongoing training and professional development is expected.
