Transit taking part in road safety workshops

Transit New Zealand is proud to be taking part in a series of nationwide “pre-policy” engagement workshops with stakeholders and the community. This is in the lead-up to providing policy proposals for the Government’s Road Safety to 2010 strategy.

The National Road Safety Committee comprises The Secretary for Transport (convenor), The Commissioner of Police and the Chief Executives of: Transit New Zealand, Land Transport New Zealand, The Accident Compensation Corporation and Local Government New Zealand.  The Secretary of Labour, the Secretary for Justice and the Director-General of Health are associate members of the Committee.

The four-hour workshops are supported through the Ministry of Transport and are being run with the New Zealand-wide team of Road Safety Coordinators, District Councils, Transit New Zealand, NZ Police, Land Transport New Zealand and ACC to ensure that people at the local and community levels have the opportunity to engage in the pre-policy discussions.

The workshops begin in Wellington on July 17 and will be held around the country over the next few weeks. Some areas are holding evening meetings for the convenience of the public.

A background information booklet will be available before the workshop.  This booklet will outline:

  • Disproportionate risks faced by young and novice drivers
  • Speed management penalties which improve outcomes and address the “revenue gathering” myth
  • Reinvigorating the stalled downward trend in numbers and proportions of fatal and serious injury crashes where alcohol is a contributing factor.

This includes more effective management of alcohol related safety risks among young and novice drivers and heavy vehicle and commercial vehicle drivers.

Information relevant to the regions will be provided, and results of the sessions will be available on the website for comment.
