Young talent recognised in geography competition

Transit New Zealand and the New Zealand Geographical Society (NZGS) are delighted at the high level of skill displayed by entrants of the 2007 Transit New Zealand Year 13 Geography Competition.

Transit and NZGS are proud to congratulate the following students for their achievement in the competition:

  • Overall winner - $1000:  Adam Goodall from Palmerston North Boys High for 'The Flyger's Line Big-Box Retail Development'.
  • Best Roading Project winner - $500: Trelise Needham from St Peter's School in Cambridge for ''Southern Comfort: safety Issues surrounding the Southern Entry and Exit point at St Peter's School'.
  • Commendation - $200: Duncan Harding from Otumoetai College , Tauranga, who received a commendation for his project 'An Investigation of the Southern Pipeline Project'.

The competition is run by the New Zealand Geographical Society in association with the New Zealand Board of Geography Teachers and was judged by Dr Nick Preston of the School of Geography , Environment and Earth Sciences at Victoria University of Wellington. Transit has been a proud sponsor of the competition since 2000, and sees the competition as a way to foster the sorts of skills that transport and other industries need.

Transit Chief Executive Rick van Barneveld says that in Transit's field of work, civil engineers and planners benefit significantly from a background in geography.

"We're thrilled to see such a wealth of talent coming up through the ranks at a time when these skills are in greater demand than ever in New Zealand ."

Competition Coordinator for the Board of Geography Teachers Marg Williams  says that the work submitted by the students was sound geographic research and displayed a high level of analysis.

"Having the support of Transit has enabled us to continue with this competition and allows students to recognise the links between their class work and the skills they are developing for use in the future".

In the course of this competition students were required to investigate and make recommendations on real issues, often in their local communities, giving them a greater understanding of the complexities of infrastructure and other issues.
