Current roadworks at MacKays Crossing finished by Friday
The current stage of roadworks on State Highway 1 at MacKays Crossing is nearing completion and should be finished by Friday.
Work on the two-lane section of the highway, on the Paekakariki side of the overbridge, is finished. Roadmarking of the overbridge will happen over the next two days, after which the road will be returned to four lanes.
Transit New Zealand regional manager Graham Taylor says he expects a speed limit of 70km/h will be in place for northbound traffic by rush hour this evening.
“A speed limit of 70km/h should improve the journey home for motorists tonight. Any loose chip on the road will be swept away to ensure it is safe and comfortable to travel at that speed.”
He says that the speed limit will gradually be raised to 100km/h over the next two days and Transit expects travel speeds will be back to normal by the weekend.
“Because so many vehicles use this road everyday, any work we do will inevitably cause some delays. In this case wet weather prolonged the disruption and we appreciate people’s patience over the last week.”
Mr Taylor says a final coat of seal will be laid after Easter. Transit will keep motorists up to date on plans for this final work and are advised to look for information in the Dominion Post and their local newspapers.
