Koheroa
Road
Bridge
opens
The first major structure constructed as part of Transit
New
Zealand
's State Highway 2 Mangatawhiri Deviation project opens to traffic later this
week. The
Koheroa
Road
Bridge
passes over the new Deviation and joins State Highway 2 to
Koheroa Road
about 100m west of the old
SH2/Koheroa Road
intersection.
The two lane bridge, which has a 40 metre deck and has been designed to enable
four laning in the future, was sealed last week. Final line markings are
currently being undertaken and the bridge will be opened later this week.
There will still be ongoing finishing works over the next few days to complete
footpaths.
Transit capital projects manager Nigel D'Ath said that the opening of Koheroa
Bridge represents a major milestone for this project, which is progressing very
well, and is expected to open ahead of schedule later this year.
"While we don't have a final completion date yet we estimate that the
project is about 70% complete, however the contractor still has a lot of work
ahead and the weather will be working against them as it gets colder and wetter
in coming months," Mr. D'Ath said.
Once finished, the Mangatawhiri Deviation will provide an improved, straighter
section of state highway bypassing the Mangatawhiri Village. Grade
separated intersections will improve safety for traffic wanting to cross the
highway, while new east and west-bound passing lanes will provide much needed
safe passing opportunities.
