Road Safety
Transit wants state highways to be safe for everyone but safety on the highway involves the interaction of road users, vehicles, the road environment and law enforcement.
Maximising the safety of those using state highways has always been a critical part of Transit's business. We have progressively introduced a number of successful safety initiatives, which are now being replicated by other road controlling authorities in New Zealand.
The State Highway Safety Plan outlines our strategy for safety management to contribute to achieving the Government's Road Safety 2010 targets. The Plan covers the options that are available to influence safety, and prioritises safety management activities over the next few years.
Transit's Safety Management System Manual details how these initiatives will be delivered and evaluated. Land Transport New Zealand promotes this system as the model for safety management to other road controlling authorities.
Planned road safety improvements are detailed in the State Highway Forecast.
In 2006, Transit took part in a series of nationwide road safety workshops with stakeholders and the community as part of the lead up to providing policy proposals for the Government's Road Safety to 2010 strategy. Further details of the workshops are available above.
