Travel Demand Management (TDM)
Travel Demand Management (TDM) involves measures to reduce road traffic growth and actively manage use of the road network.
Economic development and social change are increasing travel demand to unsustainable levels given available funding and environmental considerations. Worldwide, a range of TDM techniques have been adopted in response to the realisation that it is not possible to build roads either fast enough or to an extent that will remove congestion and accommodate unrestrained growth.
The Land Transport Management Act 2003 requires Transit to consider travel demand management options and this impacts on all areas of our business.
The three key elements to our work on TDM are:
- Physical mechanisms to help us better manage the traffic on our network ie: ramp signalling, variable speeds, transit (high occupancy vehicle) lanes and variable message signs
- Influencing travel behaviour by providing better information to road users so they can make informed choices about how and when to travel
- Co-ordinating land-use planning and transport planning to achieve integrated and sustainable transport solutions.
