Introduction

The Plimmerton to Paremata Upgrade is aimed at improving traffic flow by helping to ease the serious peak-hour congestion along this section of SH1 caused by vehicles having to merge at the Paremata roundabout and Plimmerton Weigh Station.

It also aims to improve safety for motorists, pedestrians and local residents, who find it increasingly difficult to access SH1 from driveways and side roads.

The main features of the project are :

  • Building a new, duplicate bridge at Paremata. This will be two-laned and used by northbound traffic.

  • Modifying the Paremata roundabout.

  • Adding a feeder SH58 roundabout at Paremata.

  • Widening the 800m-long section of highway, from just north of James Street in Plimmerton to the vicinity of the Plimmerton Weigh Station, to four lanes – two each way with a wire rope median barrier to separate traffic. A new roundabout north of Plimmerton is also being constructed to give better access to side roads.

  • Widening the highway from south of James Street to the Paremata Bridge to provide for the new transit lanes and clearways. Transit lanes will allow peak hour access for vehicles carrying two or more people, cyclists and motorcyclists, within specified hours of operation, to improve traffic flow and ease congestion.

  • Installing five sets of traffic signals along St Andrews Road and Mana Esplanade.

  • Providing four lanes north of Acheron Road to SH1 Rural Section.

  • Improving cycle and pedestrian facilities.
