Motorists should enjoy much better traffic flow on Hewletts Rd once the whole of the upgrading of Hewletts Rd was completed, Transit New Zealand Project Manager Kevin Reid said today.
He said converting the existing roundabouts at Tasman Quay and Totara St to traffic signals for Stage 1 of Transit New Zealand’s Harbour Link project had drawn some questions from motorists, but the full benefit of the change would not be realised until the Totara St intersection and the rest of the Harbour Link Stage 1 Project was complete and the signals co-ordinated.
“The primary objective of installing traffic signals is to provide a good traffic flow on strategic routes. The use of roundabouts tends to allow traffic on side roads to dominate the intersection, especially on strategic routes like Hewletts Rd.
“By installing signals we can co-ordinate the traffic flow once all the changes are completed and greatly improve flow through this strategic route. It’s really difficult to see the results until the job is complete, and we can co-ordinate the signals.”
Mr Reid said motorists wouldn’t see the full benefit of the change until construction was complete and the signals worked together. The Totara St intersection will be worked on over the weekend of May 19 and 20, and the signals switched on later in the month.
