Major works begin at the intersection of Totara St and Hewletts Rd this weekend as part of Stage 1 of Transit New Zealand’s Harbour Link project.
Hewletts Rd will still be open to through traffic, and residents will still be able to access houses in Totara South. Only the northern approach from Totara St will be closed.
Work on the intersection will continue 24 hours a day starting at 7.00pm on Friday, May 18 and finishing at 6.00am on Monday, May 21 to change the existing roundabout to a traffic signal-controlled intersection.
Transit New Zealand’s Project Manager Kevin Reid said work progress would be reviewed about every six hours and at critical points to decide if the next stage of work would begin. If bad weather developed, work could be stopped and the road sealed ready for Monday morning traffic. Preparatory work was done last weekend.
“We are doing additional contingency planning and will implement regular reviews to ensure the least disruption for motorists. We have also allowed more time into the work programme. The weekend closure of the intersection is designed to ensure the necessary work can be completed quickly with the least disruption to traffic.”
“This means there won’t be enough time over the weekend to carry out asphalting works. Traffic will be running on a chip seal surface on Monday morning and using a temporary roundabout for the early part of the week. The asphalt surfacing and lane marking will be completed at night during the following week,” he said.
“This work will have a significant effect on this busy intersection over the weekend and the following week, but we will minimise it with careful planning and constant reviews of how much work we can complete before Monday. We are also aware that the temporary surface and roundabout will affect traffic, and we will be working hard to minimise problems during the week until we can activate the traffic signals later in the week”
If the weather does not allow the works to commence on the weekend of May 19 and 20, work will be postponed until the weekend of May 26 and 27.
