New Signals Turn on at Totara St for Harbour Link

25 May 2007

New traffic signals at the Totara St intersection on Hewletts Rd will be turned on early next week.

Work on converting the major intersection from a roundabout to a signalised intersection began mid-May, with round the clock work over the weekend of May 18 - 21 to remove the existing roundabout and replace it with a temporary roundabout until the signals could be installed.

Asphalt surfacing has been completed at night last week, and lane marking will be completed before the signals are turned on. Once the upgrade of Hewletts Rd is completed in a few months, motorists should enjoy much better traffic flow on Hewletts Road, with co-ordination of traffic signals along its full length, Transit New Zealand Project Manager Kevin Reid said.

The next major work on Hewletts Rd begins this week on Ballance Corner. Work is also planned between the old Toll Plaza building and the Tasman Quay intersection and between the Totara and Tasman intersections. This work will provide extra road width and reconstruction of the existing road, and will continue until mid July.

“This work is likely to slow traffic so motorists are advised to use alternate routes, use public transport and allow plenty of time for their journey,” Mr Reid said.

“We are taking all reasonable steps to minimise the effect of these works on motorists. However, motorists need to expect some congestion and delays resulting from our work and associated traffic management.”

Mr Reid said traffic management was in place to ensure safety, both to workers and motorists.

“The traffic management is designed to provide a safe passage through the works for the public. As part of this we often impose temporary speed restrictions to ensure people travel at an appropriate and safe speed. Motorists should observe these temporary speed restrictions because ultimately any increased speeds increase the risk of accident and injury to both our workers and road users,” he said.
