Pedestrian Access around Ballance Corner To Go

5 July 2007

From Monday (July 9), pedestrians won't be able to use the existing footpath on the inside of Ballance Corner.

Transit New Zealand's Harbour Link Project Manager Kevin Reid said the footpath is to be closed permanently to provide extra road width for the four-laning of Hewletts Rd around Ballance Corner as part of Stage 1 of the project. Pedestrians will need to use a new footpath installed along Totara St south, continuing down the access road to the Aerodrome Bridge boat ramp.

Additional street lighting has been installed, and vegetation has been removed between the boat ramp carpark and the causeway to improve visibility to the area. Accessways for the footpath will be signposted.

Cyclists are also encouraged to use this alternative route until the new combined footpath and cycleway around the outside of Ballance Corner is completed at the end of Stage 2 of the project in 2010.

Completion date for Harbour Link Stage 1 - the four-laning of Hewletts Rd - is early September 2007.
