Last Set of Traffic Signals about to be turned on in Hewletts Road

13 July 2007

New traffic signals at Waimarie St intersection on Hewletts Rd will be turned on early next week.

These traffic signals are the last to be installed along Hewletts Rd as part of Transit New Zealand's Harbour Link Project (Stage 1), which is due for completion in September 2007.

Transit New Zealand's Harbour Link Project Manager Kevin Reid said the installation of these signals is a step closer to the completion of this important project.

“I would like to thank the public for their patience during the works, which on completion will allow more predictable journey times for those travelling on Hewletts Road. However, until construction of Stage 1 is completed, delays are still likely to occur."

Senior Sergeant Ian Campion, the officer in charge of road policing in the Western Bay, said it was timely to remind motorists of the blocking rule regarding intersections.

“If you find yourself in a traffic queue you must not enter or attempt to cross an intersection, railway level crossing, pedestrian crossing or an area controlled by pedestrian traffic signals, unless there is a space for your vehicle on the other side of the crossing or intersection and your intended exit is free of traffic. You must not obstruct an intersection or crossing."

He commented that his officers would be monitoring this situation along Hewletts Rd to ensure motorists are complying with this rule and not running red lights.
