Pruning of Pohutakawa and Oak trees on the eastern boundary of the Mission Cemetery next to the approach to Tauranga Harbour Bridge, is scheduled for Friday, September 21.
The pruning is required as part of construction work for Transit New Zealand’s Harbour Link Project, to provide a 5.5m height clearance for the Dive Cr westbound off ramp from the existing Harbour Bridge. Harbour Link Project Manager, Kevin Reid, said Tauranga City Council’s arborist and representatives from Ngai Tamarawaho Hapu had been consulted about the pruning. Timber from the tree pruning will be given to Ngai Tamarawaho for carving.
The road shoulder will be closed for the pruning on Friday, with work planned to be completed in one day. If it rains, the work will be moved to Monday, September 24.
During October, the Pohutakawa in the centre of the Dive Cr roundabout next to the Harbour Bridge will be removed. The tree will be stored during construction and replanted near the end of the Project, next to the Mobil service station on Chapel St. Extensive landscaping will be undertaken as part of the urban design for the Project, and will include planting of 60 large specimen trees.
