Bridge Beams on the Move to Final Resting Place

Tauranga Office

June 6, 2008

The first of the bridge beams for the Chapel St eastbound off-ramp were moved out of the precast factory on Cross Rd and relocated to Chapel St last night.

Transit New Zealand Harbour Link project manager Kevin Reid said most of the beams for the project will be transported on internal roads through the construction site; but these beams had to go on public roads as the internal roads were still being completed. The work was undertaken at night to reduce disruption to motorists and required a lot of careful planning from the traffic management team.

"The transporters used were 40 metres long and weighed 110 tonne when loaded, requiring some careful driving getting around the Dive Cr roundabout, over the Marsh St bridge and through the Chapel St intersection. I'm pleased to report everything went very smoothly, and with the beams being placed on crossheads last night, yet another project milestone - the completion of the first span of the Chapel St eastbound off-ramp - has been achieved," Mr Reid said.
