Cyclists Encouraged to Take Other Routes

Tauranga Office

June 26, 2008

Cyclists are being encouraged to use a number of other routes now that traffic has been shifted for Transit New Zealand's Harbour Link project.

One lane has been closed to westbound traffic on Takitimu Drive between Chapel St and Elizabeth St, so that the Chapel St westbound on-ramp can be completed. Rather than negotiating the narrow shoulder next to the temporary concrete barriers on Takitimu Drive, cyclists are being redirected up Chapel St towards Cameron Rd.

Installing concrete barriers along the causeway from the existing Harbour Bridge to the entrance of the Tauranga Bridge Marina has also reduced the width of the road shoulder. Cyclists heading from Tauranga to the Mount should use the footpath on the Harbour Bridge, continue along the causeway footpath to the boat ramp which will take them along Totara St south to Hewletts Rd.

Transit Project Manager Kevin Reid said that during construction of Stage 1 of the project, additional street lighting was installed along Totara St south and vegetation removed between the boat ramp car park and causeway to improve visibility. Both detours for cyclists have been signposted.

"I would like to thank cyclists for their patience while construction work is being carried out," Mr Reid said.
