Further Traffic Switches on Takitimu Drive

Tauranga Office

3 September, 2008

A major traffic switch will be made on Monday, September 8 along Takitimu Drive as work begins on the approach embankment for the Chapel St viaduct - part of Stage 2 of the NZ Transport Agency’s Harbour Link Project.

On Sunday, eastbound traffic on Takitimu Drive from Elizabeth St to Chapel St will be reduced to a single lane to prepare for installation of the new road layout.  From 6.00pm on Sunday evening until 6.00am on Monday morning Takitimu Drive will be closed from Marsh St to Elizabeth St.  Further road closures will be in place again from 7.00pm on Monday evening until 6.00am Tuesday, and from 8.00pm Tuesday evening through until 6.00am on Wednesday morning.  Traffic will be diverted along Cameron Rd.

On Monday morning eastbound traffic on Takitimu Drive heading to Otumoetai and Matua, will move into the left lane well back from the Chapel St/Marsh St intersection, as the two eastbound lanes on Takitimu Drive will be separated just past the footbridge.  Once the Chapel St eastbound off ramp is completed in October, Otumoetai and Matua traffic will be moved onto the off ramp.

Traffic heading eastbound along Takitimu Drive towards Mt Maunganui and the Port will be moved across to the Chapel St westbound on ramp.  NZ Transport Agency Harbour Link project manager Kevin Reid said that the east and westbound traffic from the Chapel St/Marsh St intersection to the first footbridge will be moving through a narrow piece of road, separated only by double yellow lines with a 50kph speed restriction.  This new road layout will be place until September 2009.

Cyclists should use Cameron Rd as an alternative to Takitimu Dr between Chapel St and Elizabeth St to avoid having to negotiate narrow shoulders and ‘pinch points’ through this construction zone.

These closures are weather dependant, in the event of bad weather the closures will be moved to the next suitable days.

Further information about the traffic switches and updates on the project’s progress is available at the Harbour Link Public Information Centre in Dive Cr.  The Centre is open Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pm.
