First Viaduct Beams to be placed for Harbour Link

Tauranga Office

9 October, 2008

Now that the crossheads bordering Chapel St have been completed, the first of the viaduct beams for the NZ Transport Agency’s Harbour Link Project will be installed over the weekend.

Placement of the beams over Chapel St will require a full road closure on Chapel St from Bay Central Shopping Centre to Marsh St intersection.  The closures will take place from 6.00pm Sunday 12th October to 6.00am Monday 13th October and from 7.00pm Monday 13th October through to 6.00am Tuesday 14th October.  During the closures traffic will be diverted around the works via Waihi Rd, Otumoetai Rd and Grange Rd, detours will be signposted.

These closures are weather dependant, in the event of bad weather the closures will be moved to the next suitable day.

The beams have been produced in the purpose built on-site precast concrete yard next to the Sulphur Point railway yard, and will be used in constructing the Chapel St viaduct, the link from Takitimu Dr over Chapel St and Marsh St to the new Harbour Bridge.

A total of 184 beams, up to 37 metres long and weighing up to 80 tonnes, will be cast for the viaduct and are the main structural forms of the viaduct.  NZ Transport Agency’s Project Manager Kevin Reid said he was pleased to see this milestone being reached and looked forward to seeing more of the beams installed over the coming months.

The last of the 72 piles required for the viaduct was completed this week.
