Cyclists are being asked to take care when cycling through the Harbour Link Project site with the commencement of Bike Wise Month on 1st February.
NZ Transport Agency’s Project Manager Kevin Reid said with the number of cyclists in the area expected to increase during February as part of the Bike Wise Battle, which encourages people to try cycling to work, cyclists need to remember there are restrictions when cycling through the project site.
“Cyclists should use Cameron Rd as an alternative to Takitimu Dr between Chapel St and Elizabeth St to avoid having to negotiate narrow shoulders and ‘pinch points’ through this construction zone,” he said.
Temporary concrete barriers have been installed along the Mount causeway from the existing Harbour Bridge to Aerodrome Bridge, reducing the width of the road shoulder. Cyclists are encouraged to use the footpath on the Harbour Bridge and causeway to the Whareroa Boat Ramp which will take them along Totara St south to Hewletts Rd.
In mid-February lanes on the Mount causeway will be moved and additional barriers installed on the eastern side to allow work on the upgrade of services and new footpath to begin. Pedestrians and cyclists will be diverted onto a temporary footpath adjacent to these barriers. Additional sweeping is being undertaken along the causeway to reduce the debris on footpaths.
Detours for cyclists have been signposted and we would encourage people to use the alternative routes, Mr Reid said.
“I would like to thank cyclists for their patience while construction work is being carried out. Upon completion of the project pedestrians and cyclists will enjoy the benefit of improved facilities, including a designated pedestrian/cycle path on the new harbour bridge separated from road traffic by a barrier.”
