Additional planting along the Mount causeway is to take place next month as part of the NZ Transport Agency's Harbour Link Project.
Back in 2007, in preparation for four-laning of the causeway and construction of additional traffic lanes, pohutukawa trees on the northern (Marina) side of the causeway were salvaged and moved across the road to replenish existing planting.
With work almost finished on installing a timber fence on top of the existing noise bund, planting in front of this fence can now be completed.
NZ Transport Agency's Project Manager Kevin Reid said that a requirement of the Harbour Link Designation was to mitigate road traffic noise along the causeway for the community on Taiaho Place, which is next to Whareroa Marae. The requirement was to raise the height of the existing noise bund by 1.5 metres with a timber fence and construct a toughened glass noise barrier to a height of 2.5 metres above road level on the footpath side of the existing Aerodrome Bridge.
"The toughened glass screen will be constructed once the new Aerodrome Bridge is opened to traffic and the existing Aerodrome Bridge closed for refurbishment later in the year" he said.
