The motorway will replace Wiri Station Road as the main link from Manukau city centre to the Southwestern Motorway. The 4.5 kilometre motorway will form the southern section of the Western Ring Route, along with the SH20 Manukau Harbour Crossing project. Construction began in November 2006 and is now over half-way through, with its scheduled completion in August 2010.

As at June 2009:

  • 347 concrete beams have been cast
  • Over 750,000 cubic metres of earthworks have been completed
  • Over 10 kilometres of drains have been installed
  • Three bridges have been completed and opened
  • Nine bridges are under construction
  • Over 240,000 native plants have begun to be planted
  • The road metalling and surfacing has started to be installed along the motorway route

To complete the project:

  • 92,000 tonnes of asphalt will be placed
  • 7,000 cubic metres of concrete will be poured
  • 139 super T beams will be installed, as well as 48 smaller double core beams
  • Fences will be erected along the motorway boundaries
  • 6.5 kilometres of drains will be installed
  • 336 barriers will be placed
  • Extensive street lighting will be installed along the length of the motorway and around connections to local roads
