Milford Road re-opens

18 October 2007

Transit New Zealand advises the public that Milford Road on State Highway 94 is now open.

At 2pm today essential traffic was able to exit Milford Sound and at 4.30pm this afternoon the road reopened to all traffic.  The road will remain open overnight.

The road was closed to allow for debris to be cleared after Monday's earthquake in the area, which caused a slip on the road.

Transit regional network operations manager Murray Clarke said further debris removal and widening will continue for the next two days and motorists are advised that minor traffic disruption may occur during this time.  The work will be timed around peak tourist traffic flows to minismise disruption.

'While the road is open at the moment, road users are required to carry chains and drive to the conditions,' Murray Clarke says.
