Hillsborough Rd closure brings in new phase of motorway extension

20 December 2006

Transit New Zealand advises motorists that, as part of the SH20 Mt Roskill Extension project, the Hillsborough Rd/Hugh Watt Drive (SH20) intersection will be closed from Wednesday 27 December 2006 until Sunday 7 January 2007.

The closure is to construct a temporary signalised roundabout at the Hillsborough Rd intersection that will be in place for the next two years, while the Hillsborough Rd motorway interchange is being constructed.

During the construction of the roundabout, Hillsborough Road will be closed in both directions between Herd Road and Littlejohn Street including the intersection with State Highway 20 (SH20). Hugh Watt Drive (SH20) will also be closed eastbound from Hayr Road to Queenstown Rd on-ramp.

Delays are expected, and Transit suggests motorists avoid driving in the area where possible to minimise congestion. For those who must travel in the area, please allow extra time for your journey. Transit suggests the following alternative routes:

  • Heading to/from Auckland City use the Queenstown Rd or Neilson St / Onehunga on- and off-ramps.
  • Heading to/from West Auckland use the Queenstown Rd on- and off-ramps.
  • Local motorists heading to/from Mt Roskill should use Littlejohn – Olsen – Carr – Herd Rds.

Motorists are advised to follow the clearly signposted detours in place during the closure. Pedestrians and cyclists are also required to follow the signed detour routes.

To finish this work as quickly as possible and with the least possible impact on motorists and the community, construction will take place 24 hours a day. Care will be been taken to reduce noise, especially during the night.

The roundabout is expected to open on Monday 8 January with four new sections of traffic signals. Motorists are advised to observe the traffic signals and drive with caution as they may have to stop within the roundabout.
