Located in the north-western corner of Hamilton City, the Te Rapa Bypass project will provide a northern connection to Hamilton city's western corridor and will support the rapid growth which is occurring in the north and north-western areas of the city.
The new route is a 6km bypass of the existing section of State Highway 1 between Hutchinson Road in Horotiu and Gilchrist Street, at the northern end of Avalon Drive near Wintec campus. The project also includes the four-laning of Avalon Drive between Gilchrist Street and the Rotokauri Roundabout, at the northern end of the Avalon Drive Bypass.
The specific project objectives are to:
- Provide an efficient and effective state highway link between the Waikato Expressway and the western areas of Hamilton City, with strategic but limited connections to the local road network.
- Optimise the industrial zoning potential in the Rotokauri/Te Rapa/Horotiu area.
- Assist in defining the shape and function of the Rotokauri growth area primary road network.
- Consider opportunities for other complementary transport modes, including public transport, walking and cycling, and rail freight.
Te Rapa Bypass is included in the package of projects that make up the Waikato Expressway, which has been identified by the government as a Road of National Significance.
