Kopu Bridge Replacement

SH25
5km south of Thames on SH25 at the North of the Waihou River
Purpose: To improve the travel time along SH25 to and from the Coromandel Peninsula between SH26 (Ngati Maru Highway) and Hauraki Road. This will reduce traffic delays and improve trip reliability, particularly during peak holiday periods. The new bridge will also improve safety and reduce crash rates.
EstimatedCost: $47M
Start Date: Construction started in July 2009.
End Date: Mid 2012
Location: 5km south of Thames on SH25 at the North of the Waihou River
Engineering Features: The foundations for the new bridge will be built from a temporary jetty across the river. The superstructure is most likely to be constructed using the incremental launch method. Using this method, the contractor will construct the bridge superstructure on one side of the river and push it out (incrementally) using large hydraulic jacks.

Environment Features: This project is expected to have low-level impacts on the local landscape. The bridge and embankment design will not adversely affect flood levels, and the project has been designed to accommodate 100-year floods. Any effects on the local plant and wildlife are expected to be relatively minor.

Interesting Facts: The existing Kopu Bridge was built in 1927-28 and it is recognised as having historical and architectural significance.

Other: This project was advanced in February 2009 as part of the government¢??s $500 million Jobs and Growth Plan.
