SH16 Northwestern Motorway Improvements: St Lukes Road to Westgate

SH16
Between St Lukes Road Interchange and Westgate
Purpose:

The Northwestern Motorway (SH16) is a key part of the Western Ring Route - one of seven Roads of National Significance that the Government is prioritising to reduce congestion, improve safety and support economic growth.

A range of improvements is planned for SH16 between St Lukes and Westgate that will support this growth as well as catering to the changes in traffic flow expected once the Western Ring Route is completed.

The improvements are focused on improving safety, supporting economic growth and upgrading provision for walking, cycling and public transport.

EstimatedCost: $100M+
Start Date: 2011
Location: Between St Lukes Road Interchange and Westgate
Engineering Features:

As part of completing the Western Ring Route, the proposed improvements will:

  • Support sustainable growth and development of business and residential centres adjacent to SH16
  • Provide supporting infrastructure to enable completion of the Western Ring Route
  • Improve the capacity, efficiency, safety and reliability of SH16
  • Improve freight movements through the west of Auckland
  • Improve public transport along SH16
  • Support wider traffic management techniques including Travel Demand Management that will help sustain the benefits of the project
Interesting Facts:

In collaboration with Waitakere and Auckland City Councils, NZTA is proposing to:

  • Add lanes to the motorway to increase capacity
  • Raise the causeway and the adjacent cycleway to reduce flooding
  • Widen and improve interchanges
  • Extend the cycleway further west
  • Construct new bus priority lanes on the motorway shoulders
  • Improve access across the motorway for pedestrians and cyclists
Other: The proposed improvements are not the first time SH16 has been upgraded to reflect growing demand. In the 1990s, lanes were added and the Rosebank and Patiki Interchanges constructed to cope with the growing Waitakere population.
