| Purpose: | The new bypass has provided a free flowing route that has reduced congestion, improved safety, and separated inter-regional state highway traffic from internal city traffic in the Nawton area. The connection of Crawford Street to the Rotokauri Roundabout has also improved road safety and sped up turnaround times for trucks by providing a new link between SH1 and the Crawford Street rail container terminal, which serves as an inland port. |

| Engineering Features:
| The new Avalon Drive Bypass includes:
- A new four-leg roundabout to connect the bypass to Avalon Drive and Crawford Street.
- A new five-leg roundabout to connect the bypass to Lincoln Street, Norton Road and Rifle Range Road.
- A new railway bridge to carry the North Island Main Trunk line over Norton Road.
- A new overbridge to carry bypass traffic over Forest Lake Road.
- Approximately 2.5km of new footpaths, of which 1.6km is suitable for both pedestrians and cyclists.

| Environment Features:
| Environmental restoration works in the Waitawhiriwhiri Gully have helped recreate its natural forest habitat. Significant lengths of noise walls have also been installed along the Bypass to mitigate the effect of traffic noise on adjacent residential areas.

| Interesting Facts:
| The Avalon Drive Bypass is part of a wider package of integrated projects which together make up the western corridor transport strategy for Hamilton city. The aim of this strategy is to align all transport options to meet future city growth through the Te Rapa/ Hamilton west area.
