Warkworth Stage 1

SH1
Warkworth, Rodney, Auckland
Purpose: Transit's Statutory Objective under section 70 of the Land Transport Management Act 2003 is:
  • "To operate the state highway system in a way that contributes to an integrated, safe, responsive and sustainable land transport system."

Consistent with this are the project objectives for Warkworth Stage 1 to:

  • Provide a context sensitive solution to improve safety and address the future demands on SH1
  • Provide a solution to ensure an integrated transport and land-use outcome
  • Provide a solution to address the immediate capacity issues at the Hill Street Intersection
  • To integrate the proposed SH1 improvements with Rodney District Council's planned Western Collector road, local accessibility, and walking, cycling and public transport opportunities.

The result of collaboration between Transit and Rodney District Council, the integrated state highway and local road improvements will cater for the expected growth and development in the Rodney region through to 2021 and ease evening peak and seasonal congestion in Warkworth.

The work will take place in stages, over approximately the next seven years and has been designed to support and match pace with development planned in Rodney, as detailed in Rodney District Council's Warkworth Structure Plan.

Strategic coordination of the roading improvements with new developments means that additional traffic generated by those developments will be actively managed.

Other: *Under a cost sharing agreement meeting Land Transport New Zealand's funding criteria - Transit will implement the state highway components and Rodney District Council will be responsible for constructing the Western Collector road, and funding the local roading elements.
