Waitiki Landing to Cape Reinga Seal Extension Stage 2

SH1N
0-19 km immediately south of Cape Reinga
Purpose: Seal unsealed portion of SH1 from Waitiki Landing to Cape Reinga
EstimatedCost: $5M - $20M bracket
Start Date: September 2007
End Date: Expect work to be completed in 2010
Location: 0-19 km immediately south of Cape Reinga
Engineering Features: This project will complete the only remaining unsealed section of State Highway 1 (SH1) in New Zealand.

The seal extension will follow the current road alignment as much as possible, with some curve smoothing and earthworks to improve safety.

Environment Features: Transit's engineers have developed systems for protecting the land during construction, and restoring the site after the road has been built.

The choice of local plants is vital, as the ecology of the area is unique. A landscaping plan has been developed by DOC and Ngati Kuri to ensure land affected by the project is replanted with seedlings sourced and grown locally.

The proposed works will also have significant environmental benefits by channelling stormwater to reduce erosion.

Interesting Facts: Cape Reinga has major cultural and spiritual significance to Maori, and is a nationally important tourist destination.

Once the road is sealed, the drive to Cape Reinga will be safer and more comfortable. This is likely to encourage more domestic and foreign tourists to visit the area, with knock-on benefits for the local economy.

Transit has been working with the local iwi and the Department of Conservation (DOC) amongst others, to achieve the best outcomes for the local community and ecology.
