Southern Links


SH1 & SH3
SH1, from Kahikatea Drive in Hamilton City to Tamahere in the south; and SH3, from Lorne Street in Hamilton City to Hamilton International Airport
Purpose: This is project to consider and implement the long-term integrated transportation requirements of the growing area south of Hamilton. The aims is to develop an efficient group of routes linking SH1, from Kahikatea Drive in Hamilton City to Tamahere in the south; and SH3, from Lorne Street in Hamilton City to Hamilton International Airport. These State highway routes are to be integrated with major arterials within Peacocke's growth cell, which also link to southern rural fringes of Hamilton City within Waipa District.

Start Date: Southern Links Investigation phase is proposed to start in early 2010.
Location: SH1, from Kahikatea Drive in Hamilton City to Tamahere in the south; and SH3, from Lorne Street in Hamilton City to Hamilton International Airport
Engineering Features: Once completed this project will reduce congestion on SH1 and SH3 in the Hillcrest and Melville suburbs of Hamilton and provide strategic routes to freight hubs within Hamilton City and at the Hamilton International Airport. Southern Links will also compliment Waikato Expressway (a route of national significance) by providing the main southern access to Hamilton City to and from the Expressway.
Interesting Facts: This project has been integrated into Future Proof - the sub-regional growth strategy being developed in and around Hamilton by Environment Waikato, Hamilton City, and Waikato and Waipa District Councils. A complimentary Future Proof planning study called 'Southern Sector Study' is underway, with completion targeted for end of 2009.

Other: *Transit New Zealand's 10-year State Highway Plan and Forecast for 2007/08 to 2016/17.

Scoping for potential investigation started in late 2005 and was concluded in early 2006. Further progress has been delayed awaiting findings of the Future Proof Strategy and the complimentary Hamilton Urban Growth Strategy and Waipa 2050 (growth strategy).
