Te Rapa Bypass

Purpose: To provide an efficient western link from State Highway 1 at Horotiu into Avalon Drive.
EstimatedCost: $200M-$220M
Start Date: Design started March 2009.
Location: North West of Hamilton City
Engineering Features: The new route is a 6km bypass of the existing section of SH1 between Hutchinson Road in Horotiu and Gilchrist Street, at the northern end of Avalon Drive near the Wintec campus. The project also includes the four-laning of Avalon Drive between Gilchrist Street and the Rotokauri Roundabout, at the northern end of the Avalon Drive Bypass. Te Rapa Bypass will provide a northern connection to Hamilton city's western corridor and will support the rapid growth which is occurring in the north and northwestern areas of the city.

Interesting Facts: Te Rapa Bypass is included in the package of projects that make up the Waikato Expressway, which has been identified by Government as a Road of National Significance.

Other:

The construction phase of the Te Rapa Bypass is expected to commence in 2010, subject to completion of land acquisition (currently underway), settlement of three appeals on the designation, and construction funding.
