Katikati Bypass Investigation

SH2
Katikati township, 40km north-west of Tauranga on SH2
Purpose:

Outline
State Highway 2 currently passes through the main street of Katikati, a small town located 40km north-west of Tauranga. A 2.5 km bypass has been planned for some time to take the highway west of the town centre

Benefits
The bypass will shorten the route, reduce congestion in Katikati township, improve safety for vehicles turning from local roads, and provide a safer and more attractive environment for walking, cycling and public transport. The bypass and associated works will also assist in defining the shape and nature of the future land use areas of Katikati.

Status
An investigation is currently being undertaken into the long-standing designation for the bypass to ensure that it will meet the future needs of Katikati, and is consistent with the NZTA's overall strategy for the long-term management of SH2. The investigation includes two intersection improvement projects - traffic signals at the Marshall Road intersection and a roundabout at Wharawhara Road intersection. These two projects will form the first stage of the Katikati Bypass and provide access to the industrial and residential areas in the proposed Katikati Structure Plan.

Start Date: Investigation started May 2008
Location: Katikati township, 40km north-west of Tauranga on SH2
Other:

Full design and construction for the Bypass realignment is not currently included in NZTA's 10 year State Highway Forecast.
