Arahura River Bridge

SH6
West Coast
Purpose: The current Arahura Bridge is a single lane bridge which is shared by road and rail traffic. The replacement of the Arahura Bridge is a joint venture between Transit and ONTRACK. The new road alignment to the south of the bridge will be on the seaward side of the railway line, crossing the rail tracks at Arahura Valley Road via roundabout similar to the one at Kumara Junction.

Start Date: 2008
End Date: 2010
Location: West Coast
Engineering Features: The current bridge was built in 1887 and is 204m long and 3.2m wide.
Interesting Facts: The Arahura River is unique as it is the only privately owned river in New Zealand.
Other: ONTRACK has reponsibility for the bridge, river protection works and rail alterations. Unlike the present bridge, the new structure will have two lanes with separate road and rail bridge spans next to each other. The new bridge will also have a combined footpath cycle way.

Construction of the new Arahura Bridge is well advanced and the new bridge will be open to one lane traffic in June 2009. The old bridge will then be demolished and the remaining traffic lane and rail bridge will be built. For more information, please click the following links.
