Te Puru Stream Bridge Replacement

SH25
Over Te Puru Stream at Te Puru village, approximately 11km north of Thames.
Purpose: To help protect the area from flooding as part of the Coromandel's *Peninsula Project
EstimatedCost: $4.75M
Start Date: Construction started November 2008.
End Date: Mid 2010
Location: Over Te Puru Stream at Te Puru village, approximately 11km north of Thames.
Engineering Features:

The current bridge can handle less than half the volume of water that comes downstream in a major storm. The new bridge will be wider, safer and built to ensure it has the capacity to allow for much larger volumes of water, as well as the large amount of debris such as tree branches that are carried downstream during floods. Once completed the flow from even a '100-year flood' will be able to pass underneath the bridge.

Interesting Facts: **Peninsula Project is a partnership between Environment Waikato, Thames-Coromandel District Council, Department of Conservation and Hauraki Maori Trust and involves an integrated multi-agency approach to managing the flood risk on the Thames Coast. The NZ Transport Agency is also replacing Tararu Stream Bridge, just north of Thames on SH25, as part of the Peninsula Project.
