Hairini Link

SH2
Hairini Link is a 3.4 kilometre section of the Tauranga Central Corridor on SH2 from Cameron Rd along 15th Ave and Turret Rd to the Maungatapu and Hairini Roundabouts.
Purpose: To increase traffic capacity along 15th Avenue, Turret Road and the Hairini Bridge; improve journey times for high occupancy vehicles and buses; support walking and cycling, and improve safety for all road users crossing the corridor as well as travelling along it. The Hairini Link project will also focus on gaining improvements for the community either side of the corridor through providing greater connectivity across the corridor.

Start Date: Construction of some aspects is expected to start in 2010.
Location: Hairini Link is a 3.4 kilometre section of the Tauranga Central Corridor on SH2 from Cameron Rd along 15th Ave and Turret Rd to the Maungatapu and Hairini Roundabouts.
Engineering Features: It is expected the project will be staged with the first stage being works aimed at gaining a series of 'quick win' improvements to the Turret Road/15th Avenue corridor ahead of the larger project being constructed. These initial works are likely to include increasing travel capacity by improving pedestrian and cyclist facilities, increasing capacity at key intersections and providing priority for high occupancy vehicles and buses.

Further stages will be focused on providing a longer term solution to traffic congestion - and are likely to include an additional bridge at Hairini, additional lanes for the use of high occupancy vehicles and buses on 15th Avenue and Turret Road, and a grade separation aimed at improving the Maungatapu/Hairini intersections.

Interesting Facts: NZTA is delivering the Hairini Link project in close collaboration with Tauranga City Council. This project was initially called Tauranga Central Corridor Improvements.

Other: Initial feasibility work is being carried out to determine a selection of options for investigation. The proposed initial improvements, which include the Fraser Street/15th Avenue intersection, will be put out for public consultation in late 2009.
