Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 - Strategic Study

SH1, SH73 & SH73A
In the area from the proposed Christchurch Southern Motorway from the Springs Roads/Halswell Junction Road roundabout to reconnect with Main South Road south of Waterholes Road.

Purpose:

The purpose is investigating an alternative southern access route to connect with Christchurch Southern Motorway. This is a preliminary investigation to:

  • Confirm the seriousness and urgency of the transport issues;
  • Identify the issues, constrains and opportunities within the broader transport corridor; and
  • Identify and broadly investigate and assess possible alignment options.

Location: In the area from the proposed Christchurch Southern Motorway from the Springs Roads/Halswell Junction Road roundabout to reconnect with Main South Road south of Waterholes Road.

Other:

Current problems include increasing traffic on southern access to Christchurch leading to delays and lack of travel time reliability and social severance through Templeton affecting the economic development for South Island. The solution is a new greenfields Southern Motorway extension from Halswell Junction Road to beyond Templeton (near Waterholes Rd).(Refer to the "Study Area and Possible Considerations: Pre-consultation" PDF file attached).

The Christchurch Rolleston and Environs Study (CRETS) recommended an option that extended the proposed Christchurch Southern Motorway from Springs Road/Halswell Junction Road roundabout to reconnect with Main South Road south of Waterholes Road.This preliminary investigation includes consultation to identify issues, constrains and opportunities that will inform decisions regarding possible alignments.

A first round of consultation has been completed in October 2008. This is used to inform the identification of alignment options.

The project will occur in a number of stages and there will be an opportunity to be involved at a larger stage by making a submission on the draft Final Report, anticipated to be around August 2009.
