Fairy Springs Four-Laning

Purpose: To improve safety, reduce congestion and provide enhanced facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and buses along SH5 Fairy Springs Rd. This project will also improve access to the many tourism operations along Fairy Springs Rd, including Skyline Skyrides and Rainbow Springs.

Engineering Features:

Key features of this project include:

  • The widening of Fairy Springs Rd to extend the existing four lane alignment from Cochrane St for approximately 1.2km to the 80km limit north of rainbow Springs.
  • A raised median to separate the traffic flows with gaps to provide access to side roads.
  • New traffic signals at the Barnard Rd intersection, which will combine the current entrances to Skyline Skyrides and Rainbow Springs
  • Improved facilities for cyclists and pedestrians, including new crossings at the traffic lights and footpaths extending to Rainbow Springs on both sides of Fairy Springs Rd.
  • New traffic signals at Kawaha Point Rd
  • Improved road lighting, signage, landscaping and drainage.
Interesting Facts: Fairy Springs Rd is an important national highway linking Rotorua with the Waikato. It is also the location of several major tourism operations and an essential access road for lakeside communities. This project has been advanced as part of the government's $500 million Jobs and Growth Plan.

This project is being managed on NZTA's behalf by Rotorua District Council, and will be completed in plenty of time for the September 2011 Rugby World Cup.
