Pyes Pa Bypass |
| SH36
| A 4.5 kilometre bypass of the residential section of SH 36 Pyes Pa Rd in Tauranga.
| Purpose: | Pyes Pa Bypass will provide more efficient access to and from downtown Tauranga via Route K (the Takitimu Drive toll road) and remove sub- regional traffic from the residential section of SH36 Pyes Pa Road. |
|---|---|
| EstimatedCost: | $16M to complete |
| Start Date: | The earthworks began late in 2007 and are now complete. |
| End Date: | The new bypass is expected to be completed and open to traffic in 2011. |
| Location: | A 4.5 kilometre bypass of the residential section of SH 36 Pyes Pa Rd in Tauranga. |
| Engineering Features: | The Bypass begins at the Roundabout where SH29 (to Hamilton) intersects with Route K (the Takitimu Drive toll road). The bypass ends near the Crematorium on Pyes Pa Road. Major earthworks for the bypass are now completed. This work included detailed design and the construction of the embankments on soft soils along the bypass route to allow for settlement before road construction work is started. The embankments need to settle for about two years as there are very poor swampy soils to be dealt with. |
| Interesting Facts: | This project is being developed as a joint venture between Tauranga City Council and NZTA. The first 400 metres of the Bypass from SH29 was constructed by Grasshopper Farms under an agreement reached as part of The Lakes subdivision. The earthworks for the remaining 4.1km, which is now completed, were also carried out by Grasshopper Farms.
| Other: | Subject to funding, tenders are anticipated to be called late 2009 for the road construction for the remaining 4.1km which will include construction of kerb and channelling, road pavement and signage. View PDFFile of Pyes Pa Bypass map below (PDF, 190KB). |
