About this Project

This length of SH1 is the main road link to Auckland from the Waikato and the rest of New Zealand.

The Waikato Expressway will:

  • Drastically reduce the number of fatal and serious injury crashes
  • Provide a continuous four lane highway between Cambridge and Auckland
  • Reduce travel times by 10-20 minutes
  • Reduce traffic congestion and frustration
  • Bypass urban areas (Ohinewai, Huntly, Taupiri, Ngaruawahia, Hamilton, Cambridge)

The expressway is being constructed in sections as priorities are determined and funding becomes available.

Two sections of the Waikato expressway have been completed - Rangiriri to South of Ohinewai and Mercer to Longswamp.
