Summary: This section of the Waikato Expressway is in the land designation phase. The route has been identified and land is being designated by Transit in the Waikato District Plan for future highway development (this protects the land for state highways and from conflicting developments).
Length: 15km.
Status: Route identified. Notice of requirement issued, one outstanding appeal on designation. Design to be completed by 2011, construction not in 10 year State Highway Forecast
Route details:

  • Transit's preferred route passes east of Huntly, crosses the Taupiri Range, then passes east of Taupiri to join the next section.
  • Steep grade required to cross Taupiri Range
  • Substantial earthworks required
  • Avoids impacts on Waikato River
  • Will not impact on Taupiri Mountain or cemetery
