Longswamp to Te Kauwhata Four-Laning Map
Summary: This project involves the upgrading of SH1 to full expressway standard (divided four lanes) from the southern end of the Mercer to Longswamp project (Hampton Downs Interchange) to Te Kauwhata.
A $10M package of interim safety improvements was completed in 2005. This covered the Longswamp to Te Kauwhata and Rangriri Bypass Four-Laning Sections and included the widening of the highway to provide three lanes, safety upgrades for major intersections, and the installation of a central wire rope barrier to separate traffic flows and prevent head-on crashes.
Length: 5km.
Cost: Approximately $40M to $60M for the upgrade to expressway standards (divided four lanes).
Status: Design of the Longswamp to Te Kauwhata Section of the Waikato Expressway is due to start in late 2009.
Route details:
- Expected to follow the current SH1 route, within the existing designated state highway corridor.
