Summary: This section of the Waikato Expressway was completed in July 2006.

Cost: $82 million
Status: Completed.
Route details:
- Follows current SH1 route.
- Has eliminated the Meremere crash blackspot.
- The southbound lanes are now separated from the northbound lanes, from Mercer to the end of the Whangamarino Bridge.
- A new 160m-long bridge has been constructed over the Whangamarino River and railway.
- Major interchanges have been constructed at Mercer and Hampton Downs Road.
