Summary: The Ngaruawahia Bypass runs from Taupiri to Horotiu. It will initially connect to SH1 at Taupiri in the north and to the beginning of the Te Rapa Bypass at Horotiu in the south. Future connections will also be provided to Huntly Bypass to the north and the Hamilton Bypass to the south.
Length: 12.5km
Cost: The cost of four-laning has been estimated at $180M-$220M.
Status: Design work began in 2008 and is expected to be completed by late 2010. Construction is indicated in Transit’s 2008/09 10-Year State Highway Plan and Forecast as commencing within 10 years, subject to community consultation, resource consents, land acquisition and funding.
Route details:

  • Significantly shorter route than the existing alignment.
  • The designated bypass route starts immediately south of the Mangawara Stream Bridge on SH1 in Taupiri, turns left onto SH1B on Gordonton Road for approximately 2.6 km, then heads south towards Lake Areare and Lake Road. It then crosses the Waikato River approximately 400m south of the Horotiu Bridge, and crosses SH1 at Hutchinson Road, just north of the Fonterra dairy factory at Te Rapa.
