Rangiriri to South of Ohinewai Map
Summary: This section of the Waikato Expressway was completed and opened in mid 2003.
Length: 10km.
Cost: $24 million (2002).
Status: Completed.
Route details:
- This section of expressway begins immediately south of Rangiriri.
- The project has improved safety by straightening the highway, eliminating several curves and providing median barriers.
- The route follows the original highway alignment south for 5km, and then runs west of the railway corridor to an interchange at Tahuna Rd, just east of the Ohinewai township.
- The northern half of this project involved the reconstruction and widening of the highway to form part of the expressway.
- The southern half of this project follows a new 'green fields' route, which bypasses Ohinewai and travels alongside the North Island Main Trunk Railway line.
- The expressway rejoins the original highway alignment of SH1 north of Huntly at Frost Rd and Fisher Rd.
- The project was designed to tie-in with the future adjoining sections of the expressway to the north and south.
