Rangiriri to South of Ohinewai Map
Summary: This section of the Waikato Expressway opened in mid 2003.
Length: 10km.
Cost: $24 million (2002).
Status: Completed.
Route details:
- The northern half of this project follows the current highway route and involved reconstruction and widening of the existing highway to form part of the expressway. The southern half of this project follows a new 'green fields' route bypassing Ohinewai and following the main trunk railway line.
- This section of expressway begins immediately south of Rangiriri.
- It follows the existing highway south for 5km, then follows the railway corridor to an interchange at Tahuna Rd, just east of the Ohinewai township.
- The expressway then carries on south to rejoin the existing SH1 at Frost Rd and Fisher Rd. It eliminates curves in this area, which had a history of crashes.
- The project is designed to tie in neatly with future adjoining sections of expressway to the north and south.
