Summary: The Te Rapa Bypass project is located in the north-western corner of Hamilton City. The bypass will provide a northern connection to Hamilton city’s western corridor, and will support the rapid growth which is occurring in the north and northwestern areas of the city.
Length: 6km
Cost: Approximately $200M-$220M
Status: Route identified and designated. Design started March 2009.
Route details:

  • This project involves the realignment of SH1 from Hutchison Road in Horotiu to Gilchrist Street, at the northern end of Avalon Drive near the Wintec campus.
  • The project also includes the four-laning of Avalon Drive between Gilchrist Street and the Rotokauri Roundabout, at the northern end of the Avalon Drive Bypass.
  • The alignment begins in the north with an interchange that will connect the bypass with the existing SH1 (immediately north of Bern Road). The junction layout has been developed to enable the future Ngaruawahia Bypass to be readily accommodated.
  • A significant number of bridge structures are required to maintain grade separation between the bypass and the North Island Main Truck Railway and existing local roads.
  • The project requires some local roads to be closed (Te Kowhai Rd, Ruffell Rd, Tasman Rd, Gilchrist St) and the development of new local connections to maintain connectivity with the existing network either side of the bypass.
  • A new major signalised intersection will be formed at the southern end of the bypass, near Gilchrist Street, in conjunction with an overbridge to ensure uninterrupted flow for the bypass traffic. This will also provide for walking and cycling on the local street network.
