Contractors have achieved giant strides over the winter season at Transit New Zealand’s Mercer to Longswamp project on state highway One.
For those driving from Hamilton to Auckland it might appear that spring fever has arrived at the construction site, well it has. Lots of activity is apparent as newly constructed roads are rapidly appearing to the north and south of the Meremere village, and the Mercer interchange is beginning to take real shape. The North Island main trunk rail lines have disappeared from view as the realignment of the line has been completed successfully and ahead of schedule.
And because it’s spring, significant planting, fencing and land contouring are all currently being carried out as the road nears completion.
By Christmas, anyone venturing north will be driving on a number of kilometres of the completed carriageway. Transit Project Manager Jason Schirnack urges motorists to stick to the signposted speed limits, and to take special care when travelling through the construction site.
“Watch out for new directions and have a safe journey over the festive season”
Mr Schirnack said motorists faced a just few more months of inconvenience, with an expected completion date in mid-2006. The expressway will eliminate the crash blackspot at Meremere.
