Koheroa Road Bridge to open this week

19 January 2006

Transit New Zealand (Transit) will open the new Koheroa Road Bridge this Saturday, 21 January. This is the first structure of the Mercer Interchange to be opened for public use and marks a significant step toward the completion of the interchange and the State Highway 1 Mercer to Longswamp project.

Transit Regional Manager Chris Allen said the existing Koheroa Road access across the railway line and through the State Highway 1 Intersection will close when the Koheroa Bridge is opened. This will permit the remaining off-ramp span to be placed in position, and the Mercer Interchange construction to be completed.

“We are pleased to reach this milestone in the construction of the Mercer Interchange, and appreciate the support and assistance of all the local community and affected land owners, especially during the last few months. The new bridge will provide a vastly improved standard of service to Koheroa Road users for many years to come” he said.

Side protection barrier construction will be ongoing over the next month and accordingly, a speed restriction of 30km/hr will remain in place for Koheroa Road traffic.

This is the final stage of construction of the Mercer to Longswamp section of the Waikato Expressway. The project is expected to be complete in June this year.
