Transit, Rodney and Developers Agree Congestion Solution for SH1 Warkworth

18 April 2007

Transit New Zealand and Rodney District Council today announced details of a funding and works programme for upgrading State Highway 1 and its intersections in Warkworth between McKinney Road in the south and Hudson Road in the north. The works address issues raised by road users and the Warkworth community.

The planned improvements include SH1 road widening, intersection improvements, new traffic signals, new traffic movements and construction of a new ‘Western Collector’ route from Hudson Rd to McKinney Rd.

The result of collaboration between Transit and Rodney District Council, the integrated state highway and local road improvements will cater for the expected growth and development in the Rodney region through to 2021 and ease evening peak and seasonal congestion in Warkworth.

The design and construction of the improvements will be jointly implemented by Transit and Rodney. Under a cost sharing agreement meeting Land Transport New Zealand’s funding criteria, Transit will implement state highway components and Rodney will be responsible for constructing the Western Collector road, and funding the local roading elements.

Expected to start in the first half of 2008, the work will take place in stages over approximately the next seven years. The project has been planned to support and match pace with development planned in Rodney, as detailed in Rodney District Council’s Warkworth Structure Plan.

Strategic coordination of the roading improvements with new developments means that additional traffic generated by those developments will be actively managed.

“Collaboration between Transit, Rodney District Council, local community interest groups and developers and has resulted in an integrated solution of state highway and local roads improvements for Warkworth" says Transit Regional Manager Peter Spies.

“Transit supports well planned development that is integrated with the transport network and is committed to engaging earlier in local planning to agree joint solutions,” he says.

Notes to Editors:

  • A diagram showing the location of the improvements and a fact sheet with more details is available on request from Lindis Capper Starr, Core Communications 09 307 3937
  • Transit will be meeting with affected parties to discuss the project.
  • The improvements do not preclude a need for a bypass past 2021.
  • Transit is currently engaged in the SH1/SH16 Auckland to Wellsford Strategic Study to review both corridors and identify any future packages of work that are desirable in addressing future travel demands.
