History
Designed by Robert Roy MacGregor and built by S Williams, this shop was completed in 1902 for Kate Tonks and rented to various small businesses. At one time a butcher's shop, the design included stables and a salting area at the rear of the property.
274 Cuba Street Before Relocation
This building has the largest lead-weighted sash window in all of the heritage buildings being relocated and restored as part of this project. The window will be made operational during the restoration process.
Little of the original style of this building survives, however the original drawings suggest a simplified Classical style, termed Edwardian Free Classical. Free Classical buildings generally have a symmetrical facade and entrance, large arched windows and parapets of classical balustrading.
New Location
The building will move 30 metres north along Cuba St to form the northern boundary of New Tonks Grove.
