Works are now underway to construct the first section of the new cycleway in Buckle Street being created as part of the Wellington Inner City Bypass.
The new cycleway is part of the urban design for the bypass which includes footpath upgrades and the planting of mature trees. This cycleway will be the first complete section of the Inner City Bypass project to be finished.
Transit New Zealand project manager Jonnette Adams says that over one kilometre of cycleway and footpath construction is being undertaken and will be completed in a number of stages.
"This first 220m, from the corner of Cambridge Terrace to Tory Street, is an upgrade of the existing footpath and is due for completion in November 2005. The upgrade includes the construction and extensions of low retaining walls to enable at least 5m in width for cyclists and pedestrians to use," she said.
The footpath and cycle way will be asphalted and will incorporate a boulevard-effect of ten mature Elm trees between the dedicated cycleway and footpath.
The existing Kowhai and Elm trees on the island at the junction of Sussex Street will remain where they are and additional shrub planting will be undertaken in the area.
"Access for cars and pedestrians along the road will not change. Road traffic won't be affected by the works and a pedestrian walkway will be in place at all times," Ms Adams said.
